A magnificent, gourd-shaped vase by maestro Guido Gambone—perhaps the finest Italian studio potter of the modern era.  The geometric design elements of the décor appear to include sun, moon, and stars—along with several groupings of more abstract, window-like forms.  It is clearly inscribed in the artist's hand on the base with Gambone's last name and his signature "donkey" mark.  There is an Invisible repair to the base.

GUIDO GAMBONE was arguably the most influential Italian ceramist of the previous century.  The elder Gambone (son Bruno was also a gifted potter) defined a unique style that fused traditional ceramic method with unstructured form, uniting the art of the past with that of the modern era.  His dynamic objects with their experimental glazes and eccentric patterns achieved great popularity in his day and are treasured holdings in today's private and museum collections.

Born in Montella in the southern Italian region of Campania in 1909, Gambone received his earliest ceramics training at the Manifattura Artistica Ceramica Salernitana in nearby Vietri sul Mare.  He continued his studies at the Industria Ceramica Salernitana (I.C.S.), eventually taking on its directorship.  Gambone moved north to Florence in 1936 with fellow artists Vincenzo Procida and Francesco Solimene to organize the Cantagalli ceramics company (named for founder Ulisse Cantagalli, 1839–1901) which specialized in reviving the rich colors and patterns of the Maiolica tradition.

In the early 1940s he teamed up with brother Remigio and friend Andrea D’Arienzo to establish his own ceramic factory in Vietri Marina, Salerno:  La Faenzerella.  Owing to wartime conditions the company grew rather slowly, but Gambone was soon winning prizes for its production.  In 1947, for example, he received the prestigious Premio Faenza award for a ceramic panel of his creation.  The genius of this phase of Gambone’s ceramic design rested primarily in his use of thick glazes, often rendered more viscous by the addition of glass and sand.  He continued in this style into the 1950s, when he established a second workshop in Florence:  La Tirrena.  In the new space Gambone advanced his earlier designs by working in larger, even more elaborate, amorphic forms.  He reunited with Vincenzo Procida at La Tirrena and also worked there collaboratively with his son Bruno Gambone.

1950 saw the showcase of one of Gambone’s collaborative works at a group exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.  In 1951 Gambone enjoyed a solo showing at the Galleria Il Milione in Milan.  By the end of the decade, he had achieved wide international acclaim.  He upheld his dedication to his work until 1967, when La Tirrena closed its doors.  Gambone died two years later at the age of 60.

Informative, compact history of rulers, religion and struggles.
Format: Kindle
This book is well written. It filled out my knowledge of Ethiopia, which was mostly that it was isolated from neighbors and most empires. I had heard of biblical contacts, two Italian invasions, civil wars and famines. In this book I learned of contacts with ancient Rome, Byzantium, the Ottomans, and Arabs. Trade carried on the silk road, and by sea. There was influence of Judaism, Islam and competing Christian sects. The sequence of leaders were covered as well as how they came to power. Many conflicts are covered, insurrections and invasions. The Haile Selassie period is covered, as well as his downfall. Then the military period is covered, with communism and factionalism. Finally the recent period is covered,up to the present civil wars of 2022. I would recommend this compact book, for anyone planning a visit, or wanting background knowledge.

A Rough, Rocky Start
Format: Kindle
Modern Africa started after a long rough and rocky start. This book describes the trials each district has had to face to gain their freedom from Europe and what life was like in each district under the control of foreigners. As WWI began, many of Africa's districts were effected, some were forced to supply fighting men, some had their resources used to support the war effort, and some had fighting in their area. When WWII started Africa found that not much had changed. However, as Africa gained its freedom and became self governing internal wars broke out between the different tribes. Well, you will have to read the book to find out how that turned out. This book covers all that and so much more. It all written in an easy to read and understand format that Captivating History is known for and as always they do a great job of explaining everything. This is a great book and recommend you giving it a read.

An Overview of an Oft-Overlooked History
Format: Kindle
Depending on your ethnicity, you may, or may not, know a lot about Africa. This book summarizes the Continent’s history, highlighting the major events and occurrences that contributed its current geopolitical state. Africa today is made up of 54 countries, 2000 languages, 20% of the Earth's land mass, and 1.4 billion people. It therefore should play an important part in the World, today (which it does, but one that rarely makes the headlines in USA TV or newspaper coverage.) The Author covers, Slavery, European Colonization, Africa’s part in World Wars One & Two, and the various Religious histories going back to the time of Christ. Since the author is American, there is a portion devoted to the USA’s main relationships with different African Nations. All this culminates in a surveillance of the numerous African Civil Wars of the last 50 years leading to the reality of the current geopolitical scene. The section on Dictators and Revolutionaries is limited to one of each. I’m guessing there could have been more. Still, if you are looking for an overview of Africa as it is today and what contributed to its present situation, this is an excellent beginning point.
