Rookkwarts is een soort kwarts dat zijn zwarte en/of rokerige kleur krijgt door natuurlijke straling. De kleur van rookkwarts is gevoelig voor hitte en zal verbleken bij temperaturen boven de 200-300°C of bij langdurige blootstelling aan UV-licht. Rookkwarts kan in veel verschillende omgevingen worden aangetroffen, maar is het meest kenmerkend voor holtes in stollingsgesteenten en pegmatieten. De kwartskorrels in graniet en aanverwante rotsen zijn vaak rokerig.
