Er zijn twee soorten Brockhage oefensloten; met en zonder spoel.

De pin in het slot is gekoppeld aan de veer. Om het slot te kunnen draaien en dus te openen moet je de pinnen naar boven draaien. Een spoelpin is een cilinder die je kunt draaien, waardoor het slot moeilijker te openen is. Een slot met een spoelpin is moeilijker te draaien, en is dus moeilijker te picken dan het standaardmodel van het transparante oefenslot. Je kunt het beste met dat model beginnen, en dan dit slot met spoel proberen.
