Appelbes is een bladverliezende struik die in het late voorjaar bloeit met crèmekleurige bloemen die uitgroeien tot kleine, erwtgrote, paarszwarte bessen. De bessen zijn ideaal te verwerken tot jam, gelei, wijn, siroop of voor bij appelsap. Met hun nieuwe status als superfood winnen de appelbessen opnieuw aan populariteit. In de herfst verkleuren de bladeren van groen naar purperrood, waarna ze afvallen.

Belangrijkste kenmerken:

  • Oogsten: augustus - september
  • Doorns: nee
  • Standplaats: zon tot halfschaduw
  • Plantafstand: 100-150 cm
  • Hoogte zonder snoeien: 1,5-2m
  • Hoogte bij levering: 30-40 cm (zonder pot)

 

Tips en verzorging:

  • Aanplant: september tot maart, daarna kan ook maar houdt er rekening mee dat je extra water zal moeten geven bij warm weer omdat wortels nog niet goed gesetteld zijn. Groeit als struik en heeft dus geen ondersteuning nodig.
  • Snoeien: moet in de herfst worden gesnoeid. Veel snoei hebben de planten echter niet nodig, zeker de eerste jaren niet. Word de plant echter te groot of loopt de opbrengst terug dan kan enige snoei nodig zijn
  • Volle grond of potten: je kan al het kleinfruit telen in potten, hoe groter de pot hoe beter ze het zullen doen. Ze zullen altijd beter groeien en meer vruchten produceren in de volle grond.
