Op een ochtend wordt Ruler Marsh geroepen om alles achter zich te laten. De stem leidt hem van Manhattan naar het Brusselse Hilton. Op zijn zoektocht naar de herkomst van de stem maken we kennis met een handelaar in heel bijzondere 9/11-souvenirs, Frederik van Eeden, Laurel en Hardy (twee Guantánamofolteraars in ruste), de dood gewaande Steve Fossett en het hoertje Kitty. Die laatste neemt samen met Marsh de vlucht naar Hotel 't Paradijs in Wallem, haar Kempische geboortedorp.
Terwijl koortsachtig naar Ruler Marsh wordt gezocht, razen de bank- en beurscrashes over de plasmaschermen. Het kan Ruler Marsh niet meer schelen. De kleine Lotte, Kitty's zusje, brengt hem tot inkeer. Bij de Duivelsplas in het Wallemse Rosenven leert hij dat hij, om de wereld alsnog van de ondergang te redden, terug moet, niet naar Wall Street maar naar Wilmington, waar hij als knaap de verkeerde keuze maakte.
