Maar in alle brieven gaat het om belangrijke onderwerpen van het christelijke geloof en van de samenleving. Met een bevriende bisschop probeert Augustinus het vaak bovenmatige alcoholgebruik bij de bevolking aan banden te leggen. En in brieven aan vertegenwoordigers van het Romeins bestuur in Noord-Afrika zet hij zich later als bisschop in voor reclasseringshulp aan zware misdadigers en ageert hij tegen marteling en doodstraf. In twee langere brieven staat hij uitvoerig stil bij het hoe en waarom van Gods menswording en bij de vraag hoe publieke overheidsdienaren zich moeten hoeden voor corruptie ter wille van hun dienstbaarheid aan rechtvaardige vrede.
