This elegant two-handled wine cup is decorated in the refined style associated with the Saint-Valentine Class, known for its delicate ornamental patterns rather than figural scenes. Against the deep black-glaze surface, fine motifs of palmettes, laurel leaves, and stylized ivy create a rhythmic, lace-like decoration.
The modern name “Saint-Valentine” refers to the heart-shaped ivy leaves and intricate linear patterns, which reminded scholars of the decorative language of Valentine cards. The result is a graceful and unusually romantic example of Attic ceramic design, combining simplicity of form with refined painted ornament.
