An exceptional tool for designers, natural dyers, and color lovers — a book that defends the sustainable future of color.

About the Book

In the 18th century, master dyer Antoine Janot directed one of the great dye houses of Saint-Chinian, Languedoc, producing thousands of yards of fine wool cloth exported each year to the Levantine markets. His colors, raven’s wing, pomegranate flower, jonquil, emerald, and many more,  formed a luminous rainbow that delighted the most refined Ottoman clients.

This book reproduces and analyzes the complete set of Antoine Janot’s 85 natural dye samples, preserved from the Siècle des Lumières. Each color is documented with its exact technical recipe and its colorimetric coordinates (CIELAB system), measured with a spectrophotometer,  a pioneering contribution to the history and science of color.

Reviving the Master Dyers’ Art

Part of the series “Colors of the Past to Green Our World”, this volume continues the work begun with The 157 Colors of Paul Gout. Each book in the series restores forgotten dyers’ manuscripts illustrated with real fabric swatches — unique records of natural dyeing practice before the rise of coal-tar and petroleum-based synthetics.

Through careful historical research and scientific analysis, the authors translate 18th-century expertise into practical knowledge for today’s textile and design communities. The result is a rare bridge between heritage craft and ecological innovation, offering inspiration and guidance for those seeking sustainable alternatives to modern synthetic dyes.

The Authors

Dominique Cardon, historian and archaeologist, is an emeritus research director at the CNRS (CIHAM, Lyon) and one of the world’s foremost authorities on natural dyes. She was awarded the CNRS Silver Medal (2011) and the Turner Medal of the Colour Group of Great Britain (2025).

Iris Brémaud, CNRS research director (LMGC, Montpellier), studies the physical and aesthetic properties of natural materials, linking artisanal knowledge and scientific method through colorimetry.

Together, they bring new life to forgotten dyers’ recipes and demonstrate how natural colors can once again shape a more sustainable textile future.

This sunscreen body lotion is quite nice.
Style: Piña Colada
This sunscreen body lotion seems to work well. SPF 30 is the highest I could find with moisturizing capabilities. The smell is a bit overwhelming when you first put it on but it then goes away... so why the added scent. I wish it were SPF 50 and unscented. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

Great stuff.

No weird smell or greasy residue, feels great on the skin. Tried it while on vacation (friend's lotion), and bought some when I got home. It is my go to now.

My fave!!
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Wow. I'm so impressed with this conditioner that I'd pay three times what it cost, but I'm glad it's so reasonably priced! For reference, I bought this for myself, not a child, and my hair is medium-fine, wavy, and just past my shoulders. My hair is in good condition since I gave up heat styling a few months ago, starting using more organic hair products, and also switched from chemical hair color to using pure henna. But even though my scalp is oily, my hair is on the dry side because it's still recovering from the abuse I used to put it through, plus I live in the desert. So I like a rich conditioner that deeply moisturizes my hair, and this one does that better than any other conditioner I've ever tried, and I've tried SO SO many. My hair feels hydrated and silky after using this, and shines like crazy in the sunlight. The same day I used it, my husband commented "Your hair looks so healthy." This conditioner also brings out my waves and reduces frizz, without feeling or looking heavy... but a little goes a LONG way... this is a serious conditioner, not a watered-down drugstore product. So if you over-do it, your hair may go limp. I can't stand perfume-y smelling hair products, so I'm happy to say the aroma is natural, and while I wouldn't call it "light," it's certainly not strong. I really love the scent and would describe it as warm and comforting. I hope they never stop making this stuff. It reminds me of another conditioner I really like, by Accure, but I have to say I like the results and aroma of this one even better.

Very useful for babies
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This is a must buy. I bought this for my son who has hypersensitivity. A little bit goes a long way and it is very concentrated. The scent is not nauseating. It washes off well and is definitely worth the price.
