Hydration, Electrolytes and Keto Q+A

Q: What is hydration?
A: Proper hydration means the fluid level in your body is where it should be…balanced. Too little fluids and your body is in a state of dehydration. Too much water and your body can get into a state of hyperhydration. The optimum level is balanced.

Q: How does my body lose fluids?
A: Water is constantly lost through perspiration evaporating from the skin, exhalation - just breathing takes out moisture and out of your body whenever you go to the bathroom.

Q: How do bodies work to try to keep fluids balanced?
A: Your body tries to balance water intake and water loss by the kidneys with a lot of help from the brain and a process called water homeostasis. Here’s how it works. Your body has a special receptor that detect the changes happening inside of you. When the fluids are low, it kicks off a thirst signal. Then you get that signal and respond by drinking.

Q: What happens when you are dehydrated?
A: When you’re dehydrated, your fluid level is off, throwing you off balance. Common symptoms are achiness, headaches, nausea, and constipation. And often we've heard that people genuinely surprised these clear up, once in balance.

Q: Why doesn't plain water work to rehydrate?
A: When the body perspires it not only loses fluids, it loses key electrolytes (salts and essential minerals) that water alone doesn’t contain. In fact drinking too much water can flush even more minerals out of your system.

Q: Does Coffee or Tea count as water intake?
A: No sorry, the cup of water in your coffee or tea does not get added as a cup of water toward your daily water count. This is because the caffeine in the beverage has a mild diuretic effect — meaning they cause the need to urinate. So the one cup you just drank equals the one cup you just peed out. However if you have 5 cups a day of coffee or tea, then you can deduct 2 cups of water from your daily balancing act. And that's because that amount of caffeine would cause more fluid loss than the water volume you drank. It tips the scale toward dehydration.

Q: What are electrolytes?
A: Electrolytes are a mixture of essential minerals mixed with water to create a hydration solution to quickly replace lost fluids.

Q: What are caffeinated electrolytes?
A: These are designed for either taking in lieu of a morning coffee, or as a pre work out at a gym. Caffeine is taken in drinks to enhance athletic performance, boost energy, and increase mental focus, typically consumed 30-60 minutes before exercise. It helps users train harder and longer by reducing fatigue, accelerating blood flow to muscles, and improving endurance.

Q: Why are electrolytes so important when doing a keto diet?
A: Not only to help your body balance the intake and loss, but it's the kidneys that need extra support when doing keto. When you remove carbs from your diet, your blood sugar levels fall and you get lower insulin levels. Your kidneys release more electrolytes out of your body as insulin levels fall. Compounded to this, in the first few weeks of a keto diet, the first dramatic weight loss is what's called "water weight". The sudden change inside your body is what's commonly called "keto flu" and simply put, your kidneys and body desperately needs support to put the electrolytes back in.

Q: What are the symptoms of "keto flu"?
A: Tiredness, headache, feeling weak, dizzy, nauseous or achy and an upset stomach are all symptoms of losing electrolytes with the initial water weight. If you have a fever, a running nose and a cough - these are not from "Keto flu".

Q: There are a confusing amount of different ingredients in electrolytes available. What's in which brand?

A: We have broken down what's in the different hydration solutions to see the component parts per 100ml. The main observation with commercially pre-made electrolytes is that they don't contain enough sodium and/or very low levels of nutrients and contribute a lot of plastic in the environment.  Check out the next two questions about the levels of sodium and potassium in each brand specifically by way of example.

Q: What is the best Hydration for Sodium?
A:  The highest is a whopping dose of 1000mg by LMNT but the best in our opinion is SALTT because it has a better taste and elemental profile without the maltodextrin. Here are the options ranked
1000mg LMNT - however this brand has had controversy with the amount of Maltodextrin (an ingredient that acts 3 time worse than sugar does on your Glycemic Index).
178 - 182mg SALTT  (Maltodextrin free and harvested from the Salt Plains in Utah)
135mg Sqwincher (Only some flavours are free from Maltodextrin)
112mg Musashi
80mg Elle Essentials
43.2mg Loaded Zero
28mg Powerade Zero
24mg Powerade Active Water
5mg Plain Water

Q: If you wanted to dose straight Salt for the Sodium which is the best option?
A: Celtic Sea Salt hand harvested from France has less sodium, it has a higher level of minerals and trace elements than Himalayan Pink Rock Salt. Plus the mineral profile of Celtic Sea Salt is more balanced and closer to the natural ratio found in human blood, so it absorbs far easier.

Q: What is the best Hydration for Potassium?
A: Here is the Potassium content ranked.
408-421mg SALTT
200mg LMNT
110mg Sqwincher
50mg Musashi
40mg Elle Essentials
34mg Powerade Zero and Powerade Active Water
0mg Plain Water

Q: What is the best Hydration for Magnesium?
A: Here is the Magnesium content ranked.
178mg - 182mg SALTT
100mg Elle Essentials
60mg LMNT
32mg Musashi
8mg Powerade Zero
6mg Powerade Active Water
1mg Loaded Zero and Plain Water

The commercially made electrolytes have less active ingredients and big marketing budgets. There's also a massive controversy about exactly how much maltodextrin is in the flavours. Only the SALTT range has no maltodextrin in them.

Q: What is each mineral for?
A: Here's what each mineral is famous for:
Calcium: Important for nerve transmission and bone strength.
Chloride: Helps keep tendons and joints healthy.
Magnesium: Magnesium helps convert food to energy.
Potassium: Potassium plays a part in how nerves transmit and muscles contract.
Sodium: It works with potassium to help muscle expansion and contraction.

However you choose to get your electrolytes into you, it's really important that you do.
Especially as there are so many negative effects that are completely avoidable and easily remedied once your body fluids are back in balance.

Q: What does each SALTT have in it, and what are the full range of the SALTT flavours?
A:
Each sachet of Clean Slate (Unsweetened Unflavoured) Electrolytes contains
178mg Magnesium
408mg Potassium
968mg Sodium
Net Carbs 0g
 - Dietary Fibre 0g

Been using it for 15 years! Not sure where the Neg reviews come from?
Size: 16 oz
I've been using Liquitube since around 2010. I use it religiously in my ATVs and lawn tractor tires. Since I've been using this stuff, I've never had a flat before. I've pulled out nails and slivers of steel out of my ATV tires but yet none of them lose air or go flat. I think some of the negative reviews come from improper use of the product or not enough of the product is being used in the tires. I think this come from variance in formula charts that Liquitube has had in the past on their bottles and on their website. The chart on their website wouldn't match the formula that was provided on the bottle. So I think alot of people get mixed up and not knowing the correct amount to add to each tire. Now Liquitube just puts pictures on the side of the bottle with an ounce measurement below each picture to tell people how to use it. But even that can be confusing. For instance, take the picture of the ATV that they show. Below the ATV it says 32oz. Now some people probably think the 32oz is for the entire ATV. Well that isn't the case. They want you to use 32oz Per Tire! Years ago Liquitube even used to say on the bottle to use 32oz per tire on an ATV. Now they just show a picture with an amount below it. Now you'll come to find out that the 32oz they recommend doesn't match up to the formula they tell you to use to calculate how much each tire is supposed to get. So if you use the formula provided, you come to find that it calculates out to use less product per tire than what the bottle tells you to use. So that's very confusing as well. So if you use it long enough, you'll be able to know how much each tire will need from experience. Just make sure there's enough on the inside of the tire to coat the entire inside as well as leaving a bit left over to circulate in the tire so it can be ready for a large puncture if that ever happens. All in all, it's a good product that does what it claims. It lasts for as long as the tire does and it doesn't freeze up in the cold either! 5 stars!

Worked on slow leak… one month already!!!
Style: 18oz
Edit: Still holding proper pressure at 2-months !!! Had a slow leak where my tire went from 44psi to ~18psi over 2-3 days… Dashboard light would let me know every few days that I had a tire problem and I would inflate the tire back up to 44psi… Anyway, I used this product and filled air back to 44 psi and it’s held the pressure for a month already !!!! Be sure to deflate tire to ~15 PSI before adding the product… it only took about 30 seconds to empty the container into my tire with the tire pressure low. Very happy with this product !!!

Effective temporary fix
Style: 18oz, Style: 18oz
The slim brand has always been an genuine effective fix. I have been using slime since I used to ride on bicycles. Well it is not a permanent fix for if you have a hole in your inner tube it is a great fix to hold you over until you are able to get to either the mechanic or to your local store to get a replacement inner tube. Overall, it's worth every penny and you get plenty in the canister that it comes in depending on which slime you are getting whether that's the plastic bottle for your inner tubes for a bicycle or the metal canister as I've shown in my picture for your SUVs trucks or vans. However I don't give this an entire five stars but more of four stars not because of their product but because resorting to using slime rather than fixing the problem is more of my own problem. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 👍👍
