Fitting and handling
Allow the timber to acclimatise indoors for at least 48 hours before fixing, particularly in rooms with underfloor heating or low ambient humidity, to reduce any movement after installation. Fix with cut nails or a nail gun directly into the wall plugs and masonry behind the plaster, or bond to a dry-lined wall with a grab adhesive alongside pins for immediate support. Prime all faces, including the back face and cut ends, before painting to help the moulding resist moisture and movement over time.
FAQ
What is the standard height to fix a dado rail?
In most UK rooms, dado rails are fixed at between 900mm and 1000mm from the finished floor level, which corresponds roughly to the height of a chair back. In rooms with higher ceilings, fixing slightly higher at around 1100mm can look more proportionate.
Can I use redwood dado rail in a bathroom or kitchen?
Redwood is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms provided it is properly primed and painted with a moisture-resistant finish on all surfaces, including the back and cut ends. It is not recommended in areas of direct or prolonged water contact without additional sealing.
