ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The Back Room, winner of the National Narrative Prize in 1978, is at once a memoir, a literary essay, and a novel woven from stories born out of a long and intimate conversation the author holds with herself. On a bleak, sleepless night, C, the writer who narrates this story (the alter ego of Carmen Martín Gaite herself), receives a visit from a mysterious stranger with whom she engages in a long conversation in the back room of her home. Throughout this dialogue, the author shares childhood and youth memories, as well as personal reflections on the craft of writing, the oppressive condition of being a woman in postwar Spain, and her thoughts on memory, love, and the search for identity.

Great way to introduce children to drag queens and gender transition
Format: Paperback
This is a nice story about a little girl (in 5th grade) who lives with her mom and uncle who is a drag queen. Over the course of the story, she realizes that the reason she doesn’t like make-up, jewelry, dresses, and nail polish is NOT because she has watched a grown man wear those things her entire life. And it isn’t because some girls just don’t like those things. It is because she is really a boy. She transitions to a boy and is finally happy. This is a great story to introduce children to drag queens and the idea that if they aren’t stereotypical girls or boys, they might be born in the wrong body. Happiness can be found living a life pretending to be the sex that you are not.

Amazing!
Format: Kindle
My diverse literature professor required we read this book for a literature circle assignment. I absolutely adore this book! It was a window inside the life of a transgender child. Juvenile content for young readers but a serious and important overall theme. I highly recommend.
