FINALIST FOR THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY YOUNG LIONS FICTION AWARD

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND KIRKUS REVIEWS

A novel by a brilliant new voice, Hombrecito is a queer coming-of-age story about a young immigrant's complex relationships with his mother and his motherland

In this groundbreaking novel, Santiago Jose Sanchez plunges us into the heart of one boy's life. His mother takes him and his brother from Colombia to America, leaving their absent father behind but essentially disappearing herself once they get to Miami.

In America, his mother works as a waitress when she was once a doctor. The boy embraces his queer identity as wholeheartedly as he embraces his new home, but not without a sense of loss. As he grows, his relationship with his mother becomes fraught, tangled, a love so intense that it borders on vivid pain but is also the axis around which his every decision revolves. She may have once forgotten him, disappeared, but she is always on his mind.

He moves to New York, ducking in and out of bed with different men as he seeks out something, someone, to make him whole again. When his mother invites him to visit family in Colombia with her, he returns to the country as a young man, trying to find peace with his father, with his homeland, with who he's become since he left, and with who his mother is: finally we come to know her and her secrets, her complex ambivalence and fierce love.

Hombrecito--"little man"--is a moving portrait of a young person between cultures, between different ideas of himself. From an extraordinary new talent, this is a story told with startling beauty and intensity, a story for anyone searching for home, searching for a way to love.

A great set, well written would make a great gift too
Format: Board book, Format: Board book
These are really cute! It is a great way for a child to learn English OR Spanish. The way it is written and flows it could be used either way. The illustrations are very nice. My 4 year old daughter had me read all 3 twice in a row. At the end of each story they break down the pronunciations which was super helpful as well! No complaints and a good purchase.

Great set of 3 books for my entry-level Spanish learning kids who are 5 & 7. The book of opposites is their favorite with a cute storyline. Everyone loves twins and piñatas! They also love to repeat the instrument names in Spanish. la guitarra 🎸 el microfono 🎤

Bilingual Books that cultivate cultural connections
Format: Board book
We absolutely LOVE the Si Sabo Kids collection. My son is obsessed with Street Vendors and I fear that without this exposure through books, he wouldn’t be exposed or know of the thrill of chasing down a paletero or buying flores fr your local flower cart. With this new collection of La Plaza we were just as excited to flip through the pages! What I love most is how the author’s honor Spanish and English in their text, but the exposure is to Spanish print first! This is very unique and purposeful for our younger generations. You will not be disappointed. My little guy has me read these daily!

Amazing Bilingual Books for Kiddos!
Format: Board book
We are obsessed with the Si Sabo Kids books! We got the first set of Street Vendors and now this is such a great addition. Our daughter loves these and reads them over and over. My husband is a spanish speaker but I am not, so this has been a great way to pass down spanish to our daughter regardless of whether you speak spanish or not. Plus, the case the books come in are so cute and stylish sitting on our bookshelf. Really makes a great present because it's a great set!
