Highly prized and mined by humans for over 7,000 years the ancient peoples of the earth have long had a connection with this much prized semi-precious stone.  Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry & metaphysical practice. The name comes from the Ancient Greek ἀ a- ("not") and μέθυστος méthystos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.
