A rare and exceptional pair. Designed by Michel Dallaire for Jacques S. Guillon & Associates, created for Habitat 67, the iconic modular housing complex built for the 1967 Montreal World Exposition. Pieces with this kind of provenance are virtually unseen in New Zealand and rarely come to market internationally.
Chrome-plated steel frames, cherrywood components, canvas slings and leather straps with original metal buckles. Classic late-modernist safari in spirit. Architectural and considered, with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from genuinely good design.
This pair was professionally restored to an exceptional standard in 2024.
- Frames fully re-chromed by Progressive Polishers and Electroplaters, New Lynn
- Timber components re-sanded and oiled by restorer Tom Kimata, Mt Albert
- Canvas slings and straps restitched and reinforced by Sailmakers, Morningside
- New cushion covers made in chocolate brown upholstery linen by seamstress Diane Scott, zip-off and removable
MEASUREMENTS / 63cm W x 81cm D x 56cm H / Seat height 38cm
MATERIALS & COLOUR / Chrome-plated steel / Cherrywood / Original canvas slings and straps / Chocolate brown upholstery linen cushion covers
CONDITION / Frames in near-perfect condition following professional re-chroming. Timber in fantastic condition with slight sun fading. Canvas slings and straps original aside from reinforced stitching — age-appropriate patina, some fading and water marking consistent with 60+ years of age. Small wax mark on front canvas of one chair. Metal buckles original and structurally solid. Cushion covers in chocolate brown linen with moderate sun fading, most noticeable up close. Cushion inners are not original and may benefit from replacing at some point. All other components original except one screw.
