Released in 1970, Greatest Hits compiles the most essential work of Sly and the Family Stone during their groundbreaking run between 1968 and 1969. It features hit singles from Dance to the Music, Life, and Stand!, along with three non-album tracks—“Hot Fun in the Summertime,” “Everybody Is a Star,” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)”—which appear on an album for the first time here.
Arriving during an extended stretch of studio silence from the band, Epic Records issued Greatest Hits to keep momentum going. The move worked. The album became the band’s most commercially successful release, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and eventually earning quintuple platinum status in the US.
Critics and fans alike have hailed Greatest Hits as one of the most influential compilations in rock and soul history. It captures Sly Stone’s fusion of psychedelic rock, funk, and pop with an energy that still feels fresh. Rolling Stone ranked it among the greatest albums of all time in multiple editions of its top 500 list, and Robert Christgau called it “one of the greatest rock and roll LPs of all time.”
