This powerful boost regulator efficiently boosts input voltages as low as 2.9 V to a higher, adjustable output voltage between 4 V and 12 V while allowing an input current as high as 5 A.

Note: We recommend our newer U3V70x family of boost regulators over these older U3V50x regulators for applications that require 20 V or less. The U3V70x regulators are smaller and can deliver more current, and the adjustable version features a precision 12-turn potentiometer, which makes it easier to set the output voltage to a particular value.

Overview

These adjustable boost (step-up) voltage regulators generate higher output voltages from input voltages as low as 2.9 V. They are switching regulators (also called switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) or DC-to-DC converters) and have a typical efficiency between 80% to 95%. The available output current is a function of the input voltage, output voltage, and efficiency (see the Typical Efficiency and Output Current section below), but the input current can typically be as high as 5 A. The U3V50x regulator family includes two adjustable-output versions: the U3V50ALV offers an output range of 4 V to 12 V and the U3V50AHV offers an output range of 9 V to 30 V.

The different versions of the board all look very similar, so the bottom silkscreen includes a blank space where you can add your own distinguishing marks or labels.

The no-load quiescent current depends on the difference between the input and the output voltage. When the two are close, the quiescent current can be less then a milliamp (e.g. 0.6 mA with 5 V in and 6 V out); when the two are far apart, it might be in the tens of milliamps (e.g. 24 mA with 3 V in and 24 V out).

This regulator has built-in reverse-voltage protection, over-current protection, thermal shutdown (which typically activates at 165°C), and an under-voltage lockout that causes the regulator to turn off when the input voltage is below 2.5 V (typical).

Features

  • Input voltage: 2.9 V to VOUT
  • Output adjustable from 4 V to 12 V or 9 V to 30 V
  • 5 A switch allows for input currents up to 5 A
  • Integrated reverse-voltage protection, over-current protection, over-temperature shutoff, and under-voltage lockout
  • Typical efficiency of 80% to 95%, depending on input voltage, output voltage, and load
  • Compact size: 1.9″ × 0.6″ × 0.41″ (48 × 15 × 10.5 mm)
  • Two mounting holes for #2 or M2 screws
  • Smaller holes for 0.1″ header pins and larger holes for terminal blocks offer several options for connecting to the board

Using the regulator

Connections

This boost regulator has four connections: input voltage (VIN), ground (GND), and output voltage (VOUT), and ENABLE.

The input voltage, VIN, must be at least 2.9 V and should not exceed the output voltage, VOUT. (If VIN is higher than VOUT, the higher input voltage will show up on the output, which is potentially dangerous for your connected load and could also damage the regulator.)

The regulator is enabled by default: a 100 kΩ pull-up resistor on the board connects the ENABLE pin to reverse-protected VIN. The ENABLE pin can be driven low (under 0.7 V) to put the board into a low-power state. The quiescent current draw in this sleep mode is dominated by the current in the pull-up resistor from ENABLE to VIN and by the reverse-voltage protection circuit, which will draw between 10 µA and 20 µA per volt on VIN when ENABLE is held low. If you do not need this feature, you should leave the ENABLE pin disconnected. Note that like most boost regulators, the input power will pass through to the output when the board is disabled, so the ENABLE pin cannot be used to turn off power to the load.

Pololu adjustable 9-30V step-up voltage regulator U3V50AHV, assembled with included terminal blocks.

The connections are labeled on the back side of the PCB, and the board offers several options for making electrical connections. The eight smaller through-holes on the ends of the board are arranged with a 0.1″ spacing for compatibility with solderless breadboards, connectors, and other prototyping arrangements that use a 0.1″ grid; you can solder pieces of the included 9×1 straight male header strip into these smaller holes. Alternatively, you can solder the included 2-pin 5mm-pitch terminal blocks to the two pairs of larger holes on the ends of the board. For the most compact installation, you can solder wires directly to the board.

Note that this regulator has a thick PCB (0.093″), so terminal block and header pins will not protrude as far through the holes as they would with typical 0.062″-thick PCBs.

The board has two mounting holes intended for #2 or M2 screws. The mounting holes are at opposite corners of the board, separated by 1.7″ horizontally and 0.4″ vertically.

Setting the output voltage

The output voltage can be adjusted using a multimeter and a light load (e.g. a 10 kΩ to 100 kΩ resistor). Turning the potentiometer clockwise increases the output voltage. The output voltage can be affected by a screwdriver touching the potentiometer, so the output measurement should be done with nothing touching the potentiometer (also, note that touching parts of the board with your finger can affect the output voltage).

Warning: You should be careful not to use an input voltage that exceeds the output voltage setting, so we recommend setting the output voltage with an input voltage that is below anything in the possible output range. Note that the potentiometer has no physical end stops, which means that the wiper can be turned 360 degrees and into an invalid region in which the output voltage is set to approximately 3.9 V for the U3V50ALV and 8.3 V for the U3V50AHV. We do not ship these with any particular default voltage setting.

The following graph shows the approximate output voltage as a function of the potentiometer position:

Output voltage settings for Pololu adjustable step-up voltage regulators U3V50ALV (blue line) and U3V50AHV (red line).

The absolute limit for the input voltage is approximately double the output voltage setting. For example, if the output is set to 10 V, exceeding 20 V on the input could permanently damage the regulator. Once the input exceeds the output set point, the output voltage will rise with the input voltage since the input is connected to the output through an inductor and a diode.

Note: The trimmer potentiometer is not rated for continual adjustment back and forth; the intended application is to set the output voltage a few times in its life.

Typical efficiency and output current

The efficiency of a voltage regulator, defined as (Power out)/(Power in), is an important measure of its performance, especially when battery life or heat are concerns. As shown in the graphs below, these switching regulators have an efficiency of 80% to 95% for most combinations of input voltage, output voltage, and load.

U3V50AHV (9-30 V) efficiencies for various combinations of VIN and VOUT:

The maximum achievable output current is approximately proportional to the ratio of the input voltage to the output voltage. If the input current exceeds the 5 A switch current limit, the output voltage will begin to drop. Additionally, the maximum output current can depend on other factors, including the ambient temperature, air flow, and heat sinking.

During normal operation, this product can get hot enough to burn you. Take care when handling this product or other components connected to it.

BEST sunscreen on the market
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
This sunscreen is truly the best sunscreen on the market. I have now bought 4 bottles, and plan to purchase more. It is extremely milky, dissolves onto the skin perfectly, it feels like you arent wearing any sunscreen at all. I tell everyone I know about this product. I also purchase the FACE spf which is even more smooth. I wish they sold this in a giant container, because I apply this everyday !! This sunscreen has made it more accessible for me to apply sunscreen daily, it also has very minimal scent, and never burns your eyes. Personally I will never buy another type of sunscreen again after this sunscreen.

Good for acne prone sensitive skin
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
I am in my 30s with combo leaning oil and acne prone fair skin with pigmentation issues and I’m on prescription tretinoin every day. I sometimes use hydroquinone when my pigmentation issues flare up. I wear sunscreen every single day to protect my skin. It’s especially important since I’m on Tret. daily. Being that I have acne prone skin finding a sunscreen has always been a HUGE challenge for me. I’ve spent so much time on SkinSort and similar sites looking through sunscreen ingredients lists trying to find ones that won’t break me out. I’ve purchased PLENTY of k-beauty, j-beauty, EU sunscreens and Us sunscreens from Sephora and drugstore only for them to break me out. My skin is very sensitive/breakout prone to long ingredients lists, emollients, heavy textures, oils and lots of botanicals. I randomly stumbled upon this banana boat sunscreen here on Amazon and saw the short and fairly simple ingredient list that is low (not free of- but low) in occlusive ingredients in comparison to other sunscreens so I decided to order it. It has not broken me out and it feels nice. No alcohol in it, no irritation, no pimples so far. The tube is user friendly, the texture is light and pleasant and the sunscreen is affordable and accessible. I also appreciate how it’s water resistant so can be worn every day OR pool/beach. I highly recommend this to anyone with acne prone or sensitive skin if you are ok with US chemical sunscreens. I prefer chemical sunscreens over mineral sunscreens as mineral sunscreens break me out. This affordable banana boat in my opinion is WAY better for me personally than high end and expensive options that have tons of pore clogging ingredients. Yes even the popular k-beauty sunscreens break me out unfortunately. Everyone is different and anything has a potential to clog someone but for me this sunscreen is way more safe for my acne prone skin than any other sunscreen option I’ve come across. The majority of sunscreens are just packed with pore cloggers, but this banana boat one is minimal in comparison. The tube is travel size (tsa approved) but bigger than your standard 1.7oz sunscreen. This is nice for me because like I mentioned I wear sunscreen every single day and re-apply if I’ll be outside in the sun. While spending time outside I did not burn while wearing this sunscreen and I’m extremely fair skinned. I also did not notice any new pigmentation issues. The texture is nice, light and pleasant. It wears well under makeup. I normally wash my face in the AM, apply a hydrating kbeauty toner, tiny little dots of super light gel moisturizer (not much- I’m oily!) and then apply this banana boat sunscreen on top. Sometimes I wear makeup sometimes I don’t. It works both ways. I have not experienced any pilling. I have not noticed any scent with this sunscreen other than the sunscreen filters smell which isn’t too bad at all in comparison to other sunscreens I’ve tried. The sunscreen itself adds a touch of moisture but I don’t find it to be greasy on my oily skin. In the summer I will probably use a hydrating toner or serum (skip gel moisturizer) and then apply the banana boat sunscreen since I live in a warm climate. Anyways, this is a very nice textured non offensive not overly clogging (for me at least) Us chemical sunscreen that has been very unproblematic for me. I just apply a decent amount every AM and don’t even think about it. Like I mentioned if I’m out in direct sunlight (normally I’m not in the winter) I’ll reapply as needed. In the PM I use bioderma micellar water and then follow it with my Remedy brand face cleanser and it takes the banana boat off fine. I’m interested in trying the spray version (always spray decent amount into hand and then apply!) for my body in the summer. For now I apply this banana boat sensitive face to my face, neck, hands or whatever exposed area. If you tried the banana boat light as air face spf that one is a little more matte and dry but it’s also more pore clogging in both my experience and by ingredients lists. This banana boat sensitive has a bit of a different texture that’s lightweight and still not greasy but it’s more of a traditional light lotion. The banana boat light as air face one felt great but over time gave me more closed comedones. Needless to say I highly recommend this lightweight Us chemical sunscreen to anyone looking for a simple waterproof Us chemical sunscreen that is affordable and easy. Obviously no white cast as its chemical. Sorry for the long review but it might help someone out. Also I purchased this with my own money I am not a part of one of those product reviewing groups- whatever they are called. No shade to anyone lol.

Great
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
The sunscreen itself is really good. It applies smoothly just as advertised “lotion”. I was pleased to see it didn’t leave a white cast. I apply makeup over my sunscreen often. This sunscreen worked perfectly with makeup. Like it said, it’s unscented and that was true as I didn’t detect a scent. My skin feels nice with this on. My only issue is that it didn’t come with a safety seal under the cap. Usually all products come with a seal to ensure it isn’t tampered with and that buyer gets the full amount of product. That was a bit upsetting but hopefully I didn’t actually get a used one.

I LOVE this sunscreen!! Super affordable and lightweight for your skin!
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
I love this sunscreen!! Love it so much I bought 3 bottles of it! Super lightweight and blends right into the skin, and I don’t feel not sticky! I got super excited and got this primarily because it’s lightweight, super affordable, SPF 50 for high protection, and it said there’s no alcohol or fragrance…heres the catch tho, there IS a slight sunscreen smell, but you only notice it when applying it and if you keeping smelling it on yourself up close during the day. Other than that, it’s truly fragrance free in the sense that you aren’t just standing there doing your thing, and keep getting HIT with the scent of sunscreen for hours, like other sunscreens! The scent is extremely light and pleasant when you go to smell it on yourself. Don’t EVER discontinue this please please please!!!!
