Historical Context of Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann's Work

The Influence of 19th Century European Art on Egyptian Themes

In the 19th century, European artists were captivated by the allure of Egypt. This fascination led to a surge of artworks that depicted Egyptian life, culture, and landscapes. "An Egyptian Pot Seller at Gizeh" by Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann is a prime example of this trend. The painting reflects the romanticized view of Egypt, showcasing its vibrant market scenes and rich traditions. Born in Denmark, she became known for her unique perspective and ability to capture the essence of her subjects. Her travels to Egypt inspired her to create works that highlighted the daily lives of its people. Jerichau-Baumann's dedication to portraying authentic cultural experiences set her apart from her contemporaries, making her a significant figure in art history.

Visual Elements of the Painting

Color Palette: Earthy Tones and Vibrant Accents

The color palette of "An Egyptian Pot Seller at Gizeh" features a harmonious blend of earthy tones, such as ochres and browns, which evoke the arid landscape of Egypt. Vibrant accents of blue and red bring life to the scene, drawing attention to the pot seller and his wares. This thoughtful use of color not only enhances the visual appeal but also reflects the warmth and vibrancy of Egyptian culture.

The composition of the painting skillfully balances the figures of the pot seller and his customers with the expansive background of the Giza plateau. This arrangement creates a sense of depth and perspective, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the bustling market atmosphere. The placement of the pyramids in the background serves as a reminder of Egypt's rich history and architectural marvels.

Each piece serves a purpose, yet they are crafted with care and creativity, showcasing the skill of the potters.

Trade Routes and Economic Significance of Pottery

The trade of pottery was crucial to the economy of ancient Egypt. Pottery was exchanged along trade routes, connecting different regions and cultures. Functional divider for windows privacy
Size: 8 Panel, Color: White, Size: 8 Panel, Color: White
I ordered both a six and eight panel version of the white divider. There was some confusion on the FedEx deliveries. The eight panel divider arrived at first, but Amazon showed both as delivered. I had to contact both the seller and Amazon to learn that the six panel divider was to arrive the following day by FedEx, which did occur. Both the boxes were a bit dirty and had some small punctures. This divider had a top area and bottom area set of plastic wrap tapes, both of which were loose or undone. (The eight panel divider was not so, and properly wrapped.) The top of thid divider looked a little dirty, but passable/cleanable. The seller should consider wrapping the entire product with bubble wrap to protect against potential delivery/shipping physical and water damage. (FedEx left the box by my outside door, which could have gotten potentially soaked in rain. One better be home to take delivery if the weather is bad.) This said, the divider was easy to set up, with all the metal hinges working. No assembly was required, just unboxing and standing up. The left side was a little uneven on the bottom with the first panel, but ok. In combination with my mini-blinds, it provides the additional layer of privacy I desired. I even don't notice outside headlights and tailights through the windows with my room lights on. Additionally, the divider is easy to adjust to allow access to my windows for opening and closing. So, no need for me to hang curtains and damage my drywall. Overall I give the product a C grade because of the lack of protection for the FedEx shipping. (As a former University told me years ago, "The A has been cheapened. In this class you will work for an A." And, I got a B. So, I am a bit jaded. :-)) Lastly, if one had cats and dogs, or even small children, the divider could be easy for them to topple over. I would not consider these dividerd in that case. My motto is, "Safety first."

Great Dividers
Size: 6 Panel-120"W, Color: Beige
Love these!! Many uses. Simple, nice looking, sturdy overall. Well made. Bought to divide the unsightly storage area from the calm rest area in the basement. Also, these worked well for our garage party where the dividers let light and air in, though blocked the view of our party area from the cars driving by.
