STREETCAR RAMBLE: Satchmo at 125

by Paul Rogers

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of Louis Armstrong's (JF95; JF01; JF19) birth, Paul Rogers (JF02; JF04; JF16) imagines the great musician at the helm of an imaginary #125 Streetcar running along a fictional St. Louis Line. Armstrong is joined by two native sons preserving his legacy, and two artists forging new routes propelled by his genius. The scene is almost audible; the musicians playing beneath a glorious arch of live oaks blooming with instruments. The streetcar rolls past classic New Orleans architecture, its rhythm echoing Satchmo's timeless spirit.

Rogers' mastery is evident in every detail down to the streetcar's rivets, a nod to the machine-age precision of the St. Charles line, his model for the artwork. First launched in 1893, it remains the world's oldest continuously operating street railway.

Because the front of a streetcar offers limited space, Rogers selected representative torchbearers from a long list of deserving musicians. On the left are Jon Batiste (CS17; JF19; JF22) and Trombone Shorty (Troy Andrews) (CS09; JF12; JF19), two artists carrying Armstrong's influence boldly into the 21st century. Both men attended the Louis Armstrong Summer Camp as children. Jon calls Armstrong one of his "biggest musical heroes," infusing his own jazz-to-pop spectrum with the exuberant improvisational energy that Armstrong brought into the world. Trombone Shorty names Armstrong as his "idol." He blends Armstrong's horn influence with funk, modern rock and R&B that electrifies contemporary audiences. Together, they keep history current, vibrant and alive.

On the right are two pillars of the Treme Brass Band: founder Benny Jones (snare drum; co-founder of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band) and "Uncle" Lionel Batiste (CS10; JF19; bass drum and Jon's uncle). They carry the 20th-century flame into the present, echoing sounds that shaped Armstrong's early life. Their joy fuels the City's second lines and keeps its cultural memory authentic and resonant. The Andrews, Batiste, and Jones families - all musical royalty - have passed down their artistry across generations, from the dawn of New Orleans' electric streetcars to today's celebrations of heart and soul.

Paul Rogers first attended Jazz Fest in 1989 and has since become one of America's most acclaimed artists, recognized for innovations that helped shape the visual language of the late 20th century. Beyond his contributions to this series, his work for Pixar, The New Yorker, collaborations with Bob Dylan and Wynton Marsalis (JF02; JF16JF19), U.S. postage stamps, and posters for the U.S. Open and Super Bowl XXXVII have reached hundreds of millions of viewers. Talk about an influencer.

Collectors have cherished his Jazz Fest contributions since his iconic 2002 portrait of Wynton Marsalis. This year's poster surpasses even that classic. It's a fitting historical marker; Armstrong's birth occurred at the exact midpoint of our nation's 250 year arc. To mark the moment, the overpainted canvas C-Marque is enlarged for 2026 to a stretched image size of 25" x 38". It is a commanding presence befitting its subjects.  Paper print image size is 19.63" x 29.44".

Burned my already sensitive feet, too big
Color: Pink & Beige, Size: Medium/Large(fits size 8 to 11)
Feels icky, and the heat gets trapped and literally felt like my feet were being burned by these. The bottoms of these feel prickly and they are way too big. You have to sit still and cannot walk in them.

Just as good as paraffin wax
Color: Pink & Beige, Size: Medium/Large(fits size 8 to 11)
I might prefer these socks over paraffin wax. They are comfy and very moisturizing. I use these socks once a week to keep the heels and soles of my feet moisturized between pedicures. I rinse with warm, soapy water then hang to dry. They are hard to walk in, but there's a saying printed in the socks that's says something to the effect of "take a break, stay off your feet" lol I love that as a reminder to put my feet up and relax

Love these!
Color: Pink & Beige, Size: Small(fits up to size 7)
Love these! As I write this review, I’m sitting in my recliner with these on. I have had other silicone socks in the past and would like to share a few of the things that I have learned. These fit great! The others were 2-3 sizes too big because you could not order a size. I wear a size 7 women’s shoe. I got the smaller size. I walked around my apartment in my old ones and they got kinda yucky. Now, I sit in my recliner, put them on and chill for a few hours. I now take them off and put in a ziplock bag so they stay nice and clean (no cat hair!). I use them once a week usually on Saturday or Sunday as I’m a working girl. Also, I use Auqaphor before I put them on and put cotton socks on after I’m finished. Your feet will be SO soft. This is not a one and done…I do this every week especially during sandal season! I know this was lengthy and I hope you got some tips.

Absolute game changer for chronically dry feet/cracked heels
Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige
I had recently bought a pair of silicone heel/ankle wraps to fill out my boot a little since I noticed my heels were lifting when I was skating. I tested them out around the house and noticed they left my heels softer while the rest of my sockless feet got quite dry. So I got these full foot silicone socks to see the effect of having my whole foot covered. I slather the entirety of my feet with Dr. Scholl's Severe Cracked Heel Restoring Balm (love how convenient it is to apply it to my feet with the solid stick form) and then slip them into these silicone socks. After just a couple hours, when I pull out my feet they're (a teeny bit sweaty at first), but then overall soft and smooth and have absorbed the balm fully leaving barely any residue in the silicone sock. I find these silicone socks generally comfortable; I wear them in the evenings while relaxing on the couch, take them off after a couple hours and let my feet breathe a bit, and then reapply my balm and socks and wear them to bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, which I almost always do (not because of the socks), I'll take the socks off and allow my feet to breathe again. I wear a woman's size 6 shoe and the small size is pretty comfortable. However, I made the mistake of wearing them while being on my feet for a couple hours straight during household chores -- they must've somehow cut off my circulation a bit with the standing, so I wouldn't recommend wearing these silicone socks while being active. And since they're not exactly my foot size, they slide around sometimes and will start to feel tight at my big toe. But if that happens, I just tug on the toe area of the sock to give my big toe more wiggle room and problem solved. Prior to wearing these socks, I was soaking and doing heavy duty exfoliation of my feet every week. These socks seem like they'll work to help me extend the time between soakings and exfoliations. The 5 pack is a great value. So far none have torn, so they seem rather durable. Not sure what I could even do to tear a hole in these.
