Krakau ist eine historische Stadt in Polen mit einer reichen Kultur und Geschichte. Jahrhundertelang war sie die Hauptstadt des polnisch-litauischen Commonwealth. Die Stadt ist vor allem für ihre schöne Architektur bekannt, zu der auch das berühmte Wawel-Schloss gehört. Krakau ist auch Sitz zahlreicher Universitäten und Hochschulen und damit ein wichtiges akademisches Zentrum. In der Umgebung von Krakau lebte traditionell eine große Anzahl von Bauern. Im 16. Jahrhundert schränkte das polnische Parlament mit dem Erlass der Nihil novi-Verfassung die Macht der Adligen ein, was zu vermehrten Bauernaufständen führte. Diese Aufstände wurden vom Adel oft brutal niedergeschlagen. Sie hielten jedoch im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert an. Im 19. Jahrhundert erlebte die polnische Bauernschaft aufgrund des zunehmenden Drucks seitens der Grundherren und ungünstiger wirtschaftlicher Bedingungen einen starken Niedergang, der dazu führte, dass viele Bauern auf der Suche nach besseren Möglichkeiten aus Polen auswanderten. Heute ist Krakau immer noch ein beliebtes Reiseziel, und die bäuerliche Geschichte ist ein wichtiger Teil der Kultur der Stadt.
